Speaker Series VI

Beading through Nbisiing Nishnaabeg Histories

Recorded Wednesday, May 27, 2021

The Speakers Series was hosted by Suzanne Campeau Whiteduck, Nipissing First Nation.

Glenna Beaucage (Culture and Heritage, Nipissing First Nation) and Katrina Srigley (History, Nipissing University)

Having worked together for more than eleven years on the history of Nbisiing lands and waterways, we decided to enter into the Lake Nipissing Beading Project conversation by sharing dibaajimowinaan (everyday stories) that connect with the craft, skill, and process of beading projects and cultural arts more generally, including what we have learned about the purpose of cultural arts like beading, the stages and components of a beading project, and the role of beadwork in supporting family and community. We understand the work we do together on the histories of Nbisiing Nishnaabeg as a process of animating Nbisiing lands and waterways with stories or, as in the beading project that will follow this speaker series, by engaging in and establishing relationships through the act of creation and sharing.
